I am sweating the December 3rd Disability Day affair. We have a
cultural event celebrating diversity and all that in the morning. the
National Center for Promotion of Employment for disabled people the
National Association of the Deaf and now the National Trust is also on
board. [way to go Poonam!]. This is pretty well wrapped and set on
rails. Very similar format and all that and there is a lot of hoopla
and interesting speeches and performances by disabled kids and all that
so...... cool. Come and bring your friends btw! Its
the deaf rally in the afternoon that is on my mind. A couple of
thousand deaf people are going to do a sit in and target the Planing
Commission for inaction and negligence in the implementation of the
11th Plan. After writing to all the papers,
tweeting my last post to Vir Sanghvi of the HT, sending letters to all
MPs in the Lok Sabha, writing to the PM and Mrs G, everything is done
and still I feel that there is something really really different. Seems
there is nobody out there who gives a hoot! I even called up the Leader
of the Opposition! Emailed him! Everything! Cant really tell; maybe its
too early to tell. We need some one to sit up and take notice and go
"Hey deaf people exist, Helloo!!". so far that is not happening the
deaf community in India has been on the back burner or off the stove
for so long its hard to even see progress is even possible. The hopes
of a lot of people are on the 11th Plan and the provisions in there
really rock! Its just nothing is being done. Someone
recently asked me if the December 3rd event was the end of the road and
if we would simmer down after this. Made me really wonder if we are not
giving the wrong impression. Maybe we are being overly led by the day
instead of the issue. Anyway this time its the long haul. We are going
to have to go all the way or else we are going to get no where. Lord
knows we have waited long enough!
