What the People Say

Dimple
Volunteer
I have been involved with Deaf way for many years now and most of all I like doing volunteer work and advocacy work, talking to people about their problems and working with them on finding solutions is very rewarding for me. I have also been a student here and completed two courses in computers.

There is a lot happening in the country and the mood is building for a serious look at the deaf situation. Deaf orgs across India are unhappy with the status of the implementation of the Plan and some even tho they are not as vocal as others are looking for relief.

The deaf have been so long oppressed that they have almost become inured to it. The deaf orgs that have been around for so many years and have not been able to get any real relief are often targets of their ire, and the faceless "Govt". There is however no concerted plan to "do" anything. We asked people some time ago when the NAD was getting off the ground whether they had ever written to object to policy or to complain of discrimination. In each case we were told it was useless. some even said they had heard of others having written got no where and so felt it was futile. a real defeatist attitude prevailed and it is not easy to remove it.

The situation with Plan is now so volatile and upsetting to everyone that there is no telling how many may come to the rally on the World Disability Day. There is a strong feeling of betrayal throughout the leadership of the deaf. The rank and file look to them and they have been unable to deliver because they trusted the word of these important people. and those people have let them down badly.

It remains to be seen what they will do.
